Livvy's Manifesto of a Digital Detox

Introduction:

A negative viewpoint of the digital age and why I think our project is important:

This project could not of come at a better time. My life has become exhausting not only physically but mentally. It seems with the abundance of technology and devices available I constantly find myself absorbed by the connectivity the digital age brings us. From the process of waking up in the morning, to the last thing at night, my everyday is ruled by digital devices. I'm in denial of my addiction. Part of me thinks I'm not really that into technology; my material possessions would express otherwise.

Owning the devices is only part of the problem, it's actually the connectivity to another world that I believe has become toxic in my everyday. Rather than being connected with those directly around me, i'm anxious about what I could missing out from in the wider world.

**In the process of writing this i've checked my Facebook & phone 3 times each. Cringe**

I've participated in minor DD before but not whilst living my normal every day life in London. This has been when i've taken myself away from my everyday and from the distractions.

On a more positive note: technology and digital devices have had a tremendous impact on the way we live our lives. We're able to communicate with others in a vast majority of the world, send monetary transactions in a second, update our Facebook status 24 hours a day & 365 days a year, start an organisation online, type in a postcode on a GPS device and be guided from A to B,  work from anywhere (even hosting Online Board Meetings), be kept alive by a life support machine,

Is technology killing creativity? Here is it argued strongly for the positives of technology within education.

Invisible technology: visible benefits in the classroom article

It also seems we are taking a very privileged viewpoint. The advancements of the modern digital era are testament to the every growing disparities of who has access to what globally.  Here is the link to:

http://www.internet.org/

Internet.org is a global partnership dedicated to making affordable internet access available to the two thirds of the world not yet connected.
I don't need to unpack the above any further as I think it speaks for itself.
Anyway I seem to of gone off point:
My Personal Manifesto-
I will not use my mobile phone for calling, internet browsing, texting etc. I will carry it with me in the evenings in case of emergencies but it will remain switched off.
I will not use my laptop unless I need to access certain documents for work and for potential late night essay writing. Instead I will travel to the library once a day to check my work email and respond accordingly. I will leave a colleague in charge of our Facebook page. I will use the university computers for all essay work but will try to hand write when necessary.
I will not listen to music on my computer, laptop or Ipod. (I am dreading this already)
I will live by candle light (Love this One).
I will learn when using technology is really necessary and when it's a impulsive time-wasting addiction.
