This project consists of alienating ourselves from digital
devices this includes phones, televisions and computers. Over time digital
technology has been more commonly used and in todays society peoples phones
almost do everything from alarm clocks to calculators to phone calls and
emails. These are all some of the things I use my phone for.
Digital devises runs deeply in my life as I use it daily. This is
the main reason I want to do this digital detox, as I want to see if I am able
to do this challenge. Using my phone for various social networks like Instagram
and using my laptop for watching shows are all time consuming activities. So I
would want to see exactly how much time I save from restraining my use of
digital technology. I want to also the impact it will have on me and see
whether I end up using my time more productively. To add I want to see whether
it affects my social relationships with friends and family, as I would not be
able to keep in contact. I have highlighted the impacts on social relationships
and time as I predict it may have a negative impact because I use my phone to
stay in contact and meet up with friends regularly. To add it’s obvious that’s
it is time consuming because I can stay on What Sapp or Instagram all day
without fail. Thus my conclusion will be interesting.
There is a clear political influence that digital media has on
me is its what keeps me updated on what’s happening around the world. On
twitter I follow the BBC News it does regularly post tweets about what happened
daily. The negative thing about this is that I do not have a broad range of
news as I only see and read BBC. So in this sense I am not politically aware of
what’s going all around the world as I don’t rely on various different sources
for news or follow other news accounts; thus news I read is bias as they
present what they want to show. Despite
this it is more convenient for me to read various different news like journals
or newspapers. And this way I’m still abiding by the rules of my digital detox.
Our group has highlighted exceptions to the use of digital
technology e.g. using the computer at university for essay work. My personal exception
for the digital detox is to use my phone if I am out late to speak to my
mother. My personal challenge is to see whether I can fight temptation and not
go and social network.
The digital detox experiment will last 2 weeks the first week
will be an observation where I will look at how much time I spend using
technology. The following week I will avoid the use of all digital technology except
for the exceptions mentioned in the group manifesto.
As the blog is online and this goes against our digital detox we
will report the progress of the experiment the old fashioned way with a pen and
paper.
Hanna I couldn't help laughing at your first sentence within your second paragraph. 'I use it daily', come on, daily is putting it mildly, you are obsessed to the point of addiction. I am fascinated with how this detox is going to effect your everyday. Keep us updated
